چکیده
Draining into the northern Baltic Sea, River Simojoki is an important spawning river for Atlantic salmon. The present study aimed to preliminary explore potential of analysing elemental composition otoliths distinguish within-river nursery area origin Parr were sampled at three areas in and smolts unknown near mouth during migration sea. concentrations multiple elements strontium 87Sr/86Sr isotopic ratio analysed using single- multi-collector laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, respectively. Based on otolith variables, parr could be reclassified discriminant function analysis random forest with a success rate 53.3% 63.3%, However, uppermost river, rates 90% 100%, Applying classification models trained samples determine which smolt originated from was constrained by limited sampling parr, both sample sizes coverage found river.

Exploring the potential of otolith microchemistry to enhance diet analysis in pinnipeds
Increasing the scope and accuracy of information about pinniped diets obtainable from non-invasive techniques is increasingly important, particularly in cases where pinniped species are threatened or endangered. This study is the Wrst to explore the potential for using elemental analysis of the otoliths found in scat to enhance the information available for diet analyses. We investigated the eV...
متن کاملUnravelling the life history of Amazonian fishes through otolith microchemistry
Amazonian fishes employ diverse migratory strategies, but the details of these behaviours remain poorly studied despite numerous environmental threats and heavy commercial exploitation of many species. Otolith microchemistry offers a practical, cost-effective means of studying fish life history in such a system. This study employed a multi-method, multi-elemental approach to elucidate the migra...
متن کاملOtolith microchemistry of tropical diadromous fishes: spatial and migratory dynamics.
Otolith microchemistry was applied to quantify migratory variation and the proportion of native Caribbean stream fishes that undergo full or partial marine migration. Strontium and barium water chemistry in four Puerto Rico, U.S.A., rivers was clearly related to a salinity gradient; however, variation in water barium, and thus fish otoliths, was also dependent on river basin. Strontium was the ...
متن کاملUsing otolith chemical and structural analysis to investigate reservoir habitat use by juvenile Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha.
Isotopic composition of (87) Sr:(86) Sr and natural elemental tracers (Sr, Ba, Mg, Mn and Ca) were quantified from otoliths in juvenile and adult Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha to assess the ability of otolith microchemistry and microstructure to reconstruct juvenile O. tshawytscha rearing habitat and growth. Daily increments were measured to assess relative growth between natal rearin...
متن کاملIdentification of Steelhead and Resident Rainbow Trout Progeny in the Deschutes River, Oregon, Revealed with Otolith Microchemistry
—Comparisons of strontium:calcium (Sr:Ca) ratios in otolith primordia and freshwater growth regions were used to identify the progeny of steelhead Oncorhynchus mykiss (anadromous rainbow trout) and resident rainbow trout in the Deschutes River, Oregon. We cultured progeny of known adult steelhead and resident rainbow trout to confirm the relationship between Sr:Ca ratios in otolith primordia an...
